The title Tatort Syntax draws on the German term “Tatort” ("crime scene"), widely known through the long-running television crime series of the same name, exported to many countries. By choosing this title, Thormann suggests that a text's sentence structures constitute the “crime scene” where the idiolect of a writer, even one attempting to disguise their writing style, is to be found for linguistic evidence of authorship – yet is often quite difficult to discern. To this end, a highly refined coding system is introduced, covering textual organisation and word order, hypotaxis and punctuation, illustrating its application through numerous examples and demonstrating its role in the systematic documentation of linguistic findings. Although syntax occupies the central position, as the title suggests, the analysis extends well beyond sentence structure. Attention is also given to deceptive writing strategies, as well as to linguistic variation resulting from temporary emotional arousal or physiological states, alongside sociodemographic influences on writing behaviour, ambiguities and shortcomings in a writer’s intelligibility, stylistic habits, orthography, lexical preferences and transcription issues. The resulting methodology shows how expert reasoning can be made explicit without reducing the complexity inherent in linguistic evidence. Procedures are set out step by step, including the preparation and transcription of evidential material. The book is a university-level textbook of forensic linguistics, a practice-oriented guide to authorship attribution, and a methodological reference work. In legal proceedings, forensic linguistic evidence is expected to meet the same standards of transparency and methodological accountability as other expert evidence presented in court. Tatort Syntax addresses this challenge. Thormann develops a systematic framework and offers a detailed account of how qualitative linguistic analyses for authorship attribution, supported by quantitative methods, can be conducted, documented and justified in a manner that satisfies both scientific and legal expectations.The book also addresses recent developments in artificial intelligence and AI-generated texts, integrating them into a broader discussion of textual authenticity and authorship, thereby ensuring its continued relevance to emerging challenges in forensic linguistics.
The book benefits from the author's combined experience in academic research, university teaching and professional forensic casework as a court-appointed and sworn expert of Forensic Linguistics. This breadth of experience, including her long-standing involvement in evaluating expert reports and training expert witnesses from a wide range of disciplines, is reflected in the emphasis on coherent and transparent methodology in expert reports. Even highly sophisticated linguistic analyses can be presented in a manner that renders the underlying reasoning transparent to the court. Although all examples are drawn from German, the methodological principles extend beyond German. Readers working in other linguistic or legal contexts will find substantial value in the presentation of qualitative methodology, evidential reasoning and expert practice.
